Synopsis: "Ngorongoro World
Heritage Site is often described as 'the 8th Wonder of the World'. In addition to its breathtaking
volcanic scenery, it boasts, within a relatively small area, an enormous biodiversity. Over 30% of the
animals involved in the famous Serengeti migrations
spend part of their year in the Ngorongoro
Conservation Area. This fold-out map includes maps of Ngorongoro Conservation Area [1:250,000], Ndutu
[1:65,000] and Ngorongoro Crater [1:50,000]. The Ngorongoro Crater map shows all roads and
tracks in the Crater, all tourist-related sites, as well as vegetation zones. One very useful function of
the map is the information and warnings, especially those relating to seasonability of different routes. The
map also has a detailed glossary explaining the meanings of many of the Maasai names found on the map. The
maps are based on information from Landsat 7 and GPS ground survey 2005. Contours are derived from Africover

is, without doubt, one of the world's truly amazing places. It has been called the '8th Wonder of the
World', and in 1979 was designated a World Heritage Site.
At 20 km across, and over 600 m deep, it is the largest unbroken, unflooded crater on the planet. Adjacent
to the Ngorongoro Crater is the other equally spectacular volcanic scenery such as Embakaai, Olmoti and the
frequently erupting Maasai 'Mountain of God', Oldonyo Lengai. And yet, despite its dramatic and violent
past, Ngorongoro Crater and the surrounding Ngorongoro
Conservation Area (the NCA), play host to an incredible concentration of wildlife. But this wildlife
extravaganza has also been home to humans for millions of years. At Oldupai Gorge have been found some of
the oldest humanoid remains ever discovered. Over thousands of years, different people have come and gone,
and today, over 40,000 Maasai and their herds still live and follow their traditional way of life, within
the NCA. The Ngorongoro maps are a continuation of the co-operation between David Watson (Wildlife Mapping Fund)
and Jacana Media, which
produces well-designed, accurate and up-to-date maps of East African wildlife areas. In this Visitor Map
Guide, additional information on such topics as ecosystems, geology, the people, together with
facilities for visitors, is designed to make your stay that much more informed and enjoyable."
